More Rebecca Gohn:
interview and album review (2004)

(26 July 2009) Four years following her debut album Recollections (interview and review), Rebecca (Becca) Gohn has delivered a stunning five track EP entitled Glimpse (Self-released (USA) 22605 82162 6, 2008). The 20-minute EP not only illustrates the artist's growing maturity but also the full breadth and depth of her singing and songwriting talent. We were delighted when she approached us to listen to and review this EP.

Becca's interest in music began at a young age with musical theatre and study in classical piano and voice. She started writing songs at the age of twelve, drawing inspiration from artists such as Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. Becca performed in numerous singing groups including Savoir Faire, a collegiate a cappella group, the Penn State Concert Choir, and she has fronted both jazz and rock bands. Becca currentlyspends her spare time enjoying her continued efforts in song-writing and can be found performing at live music establishments in the Delaware valley and surrounding areas.

On Glimpse Becca (lead and background vocals) is joined by John Conahan (piano, backup vocals), Jef Lee Johnson (electric and acoustic guitar), Glenn Barratt (acoustic guitar), Chico Huff (bass), Grant Macavoy (drums), Marcus Baylor (drums), Joel Bryant (wurlitzer, rhodes, organ), Mike Brenner (lap steel and guitar synth) and Diane Monroe (violin) on this EP. The instrumental arrangements of her music and overall production benefit significantly from the contributions of these additional artists.

The EP blends several styles together seamlessly. Glimse opens with Becca's sweet vocals gliding over the jazz lounge textures of "It's Always You." "Another Cold Day" is an accessible singer songwriter chorus-verse pop-tune with a lovely but everso gentle hook. The vocal production is superb, clearly revealing every single word and perfectly treating the vocalise. The slow paced but rhythmic tempo and guitar work produce a country styled sound in "Fly Angel Fly." Becca's layered backing vocals add tremendous depth to the tune.

"Go On" is a tender acoustic and steel guitar-backed vocal and is the most revealing of Becca's vocal talent. Delivered emotively and produced with crystal clarity, the steel guitar works perfectly to support the singer's heartfelt melody. The EP concludes with the richly constructed "Into the Blue." Becca's sweet lead vocal again glide above the countrified arrangement. Her unique, almost child-like voice is reminscent at times of Lisa Cerbone.

Becca Gohn has grown signficantly since her debut album Recollections with the release of the Glimpse EP. The EP can be previewed at CDBaby where the physical copies or mp3s of the EP can also be purchased. If this is just a glimpse, we can't wait to hear the artist's next full length album.
