(17 March 2013) Haim are a rapidly emerging band from California. Some are certain to say, "they have arrived." The band is formed of sisters Este Haim (born 1986), Danielle Haim (born 1989) and Alana Haim (born 1991), along with drummer Dash Hutton, previously a member of several Los Angeles-based bands. The sisters performed earlier with their parents, and while their sound is different the story is similar to SHEL. All three are trained drummers but sing and perform other instruments in Haim; it does explain the percussion rich arrangements of their songs. Haim have been compared favorability to Fleetwood Mac, have come top of the BBC Sound of 2013 new music list. The list, which aims to showcase the best new acts for the year ahead, was compiled using tips from 213 UK-based critics, broadcasters and bloggers. Now in its 11th year, previous winners include Michael Kiwanuka, Jessie J, Adele, Mika, Ellie Goulding and Keane. Haim made their debut tour of the UK in November 2012 and then supported Florence and the Machine on their UK and Ireland tour in December 2012. On October 16, 2012 Zane Lowe of BBC Radio 1 debuted their follow-up single "Don't Save Me" on his radio show. The single's B-side was "Send Me Down," differing from their previous releases in having a notably more hip hop musical style, with glossy vocal harmonies on top. BBC Radio 1 deejay Huw Stephens said Haim had a "contagious enthusiasm." All their music is available online either at YouTube or other free locations. A Scottish band called Chvrches that placed number five has also been draw to Musical Discoveries attention. Stevens said, "Haim have an unapologetic passion for music that shines in their songs, they're brilliant musicians who have a real talent for tunes that merge their tales of growing up in the 21st Century with a classic songwriting ability." Most frequently compared to Fleetwood Mac, their sound has been described as "nu-folk–meets–nineties–R&B" and "music that sounds like it was written on a lakeside retreat attended by Stevie Nicks, John Waite and En Vogue." Haim's track "Go Slow" appears in several variations on their recordings and is our favorite song they have done thus far. It is vocally laden and backed with electric guitar and powerful percussion. Listen to the outstanding and powerful vocal delivery on the iTunes Festival recording to experience it yourself. Haim's debut release is the four track Forever EP that has been available for free download and whose gorgeous tracks can be seen also on YouTube. They have also recorded a stunning four-track DayTrotter Session (07/03/2012) and an iTunes Festival: London 2012" EP and Live from Maida Vale set. Their well-arranged "Don't Save Me" single is backed with "Send Me Down" and provides a glimpse into what the forthcoming album may sound like. Their debut album is scheduled for release in 2013. We can't wait.
